"Just a Gigolo"

CDLet me be the first to welcome you to our debut recording. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we've enjoyed recording. A band like Café Society is born not with the intention of making lots of money (though it would be rather nice!), but with the enthusiasm to recreate the music from an era gone, and sadly rather forgotten.

The style and elegance that personified the era was greatly reflected in the music of the time. One has only to think of the stars of the day, such as Noël Coward or Jack Buchanan, and suddenly one is transported to the roaring 20's, and roaring they most certainly were. If you weren't averting your gaze from the outrageous 'Flapper' dancers, you were thrilling at the sight of Henry Birkin winning the 24-hour race at Le Mans in his huge British Racing Green Bentley.

Whilst all this high life was going on, a social scene had emerged known as Café Society. All the gay young things would congregate at these events, drinking dry Martinis and smoking cigarettes through unfeasibly long holders. Sophistication was the code one lived by, affected or otherwise!

In an effort to create the ambience of the time, Café Society offers you a varied selection of period treats. Whilst we hope this will entertain, we hope it will show the versatility of the band.

Our selection offers delights from Noël Coward, the Palm Court sound and even George Formby. Variety is alive and well in Café Society! The chance to be part of a band such as this has been a lifelong ambition of mine and the rest of the chaps. I hope our contribution to the perpetuation of the music of this era will delight and enthral.

Happy listening,

Anthony Mason.
